Highlight From Our Week!

We had a fun filled week with lots of learning, exploring, discovering, and even a
few laughs from a surprise guest reader!

During reading, students have been practicing partner reading
and how to write a summary.
Summaries are a brief overview of the most important details.

Mr. Berry came in during snack dressed as Mercy Watson from Princess in Disguise.  Students loved hearing the story again told by "Mercy herself"!

Today, students from RES and CHMS participated in Google Expeditions, a pilot program from Google's education division.  Students were very fortunate to test out Google's latest creation, Google Cardboard!  By using Google Cardboard and a Smartphone, students traveled through virtual reality to National Parks in China, they hiked to the summit of Mount Everest, and even dove down into a coral reef to swim with Great White Sharks!

Even our district technology teachers got involved!

Ni-hao from China!

This week we traveled to China and learned about characteristics of Chinese culture!  There were many fun filled activities! Students made paper people wearing traditional tunics decorated with dragons and flowers for goodluck and hand held rattle drums, a Chinese percussion instrument.  We also got to see a live cooking demonstration by Chef James!  The stir fry made in the wok was delicious!

While Students were enjoying their yummy Chinese taste test, they were also designing their own dragon for Chinese New Year.  You would typically see the Dragon Dance during a parade for Chinese New Year!

Fun Fact: the longer the dragon, the more luck it'll bring you!

Opinion Writing

During Writer's Workshop students have been forming many opinions!  Students first started thinking about things they would like to change about our school.  2nd graders think we should have more outdoor time and chocolate milk on Fridays!

Now students are using books to form opinions about characters.  We think Mercy Watson by Kate Dicamillo is obsessed and crazy!
